30 years of history: Celebrating the anniversary of women's football in the Donosti Cup
Three decades of passion, equality, and female role models
In the 32nd edition of the Donosti Cup, we are proud to celebrate a historic milestone: the 30th anniversary of women's football in our tournament! This exciting journey began in 1994, in the third edition of the Donosti Cup, shortly after the birth of the Spanish National Women's League and the first official Women's World Cup.
In the beginning, eight teams from Spain, France, and Portugal joined this initiative. But we did not stop there. Since then, we have worked tirelessly to promote equality in football, attracting teams of different nationalities and inviting teams from poor or vulnerable regions.
Today, more than 1,800 women's teams and 30,000 players have made their mark on the Donosti Cup, making it a benchmark for women's football worldwide. One of the keys to this success has been the expansion of categories, with a total of 6 divisions at present.
In addition, the presence of foreign teams has played a fundamental role in this growth. Through promotional campaigns and partnerships with international leagues, we have hosted teams from 30 countries across five continents.
To position women's football as a central pillar of the Donosti Cup, we invited elite clubs such as Atlético Madrid, Olympique Lyon, Paris Saint Germain, etc., attracting top national and international teams.
The Donosti Cup has become a springboard for young players who dream of reaching the top. More than 50 players have gone through the tournament before achieving success. We want the girls to have role models and believe that they can make it too. This year, we proudly celebrate that three world champions (Irene Paredes, Jennifer Hermoso, and Cata Coll), have been part of the Donosti Cup.
This is just the beginning of what is to come in this exciting journey.
