A selection of Western Sahara will participate in the Donosti Cup 2023 invited by the Foundation
The Saharawi Sports Federation will be in charge of this selection of players who will represent Western Sahara in the Donosti Cup 2023.
The Donosti Cup Foundation, as part of its strategy to support projects that use soccer as a tool for social transformation, has invited a selection of Western Sahara to participate in the next edition of the tournament.
Thanks to initiatives such as this one, more than 50 teams from poor or very vulnerable regions, conflict zones, countries deprived of their freedom, or cities hit by natural disasters have already been able to participate in the tournament. Over the years, and just to mention a few of these countries, we can highlight Sierra Leone, Zambia, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Uganda, India, Nepal, Palestine, Iraq, Ukraine, Romania, Croatia, El Salvador, Peru, Honduras, Colombia, and Bolivia.
On this occasion, the initiative has come from the Sahrawi Sports Federation (FSD), a non-profit organization, founded in 2020, and which collaborates jointly with the Ministry of Occupied Territories and Diaspora, and with the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR). Its main objective is to promote social and educational recognition, through participation in sports of the Saharawi community in the diaspora.
Thus, a selection of 13 year-old Saharawi players will travel to San Sebastian this summer to enjoy the experience of participating in an international tournament of the identity of the Donosti Cup.
It is not the first time that a Saharawi team participates in the Donosti Cup, between 2011 and 2014, young Saharawi participants in the program "Holidays in Peace", were invited by the Donosti Cup Foundation to participate in the tournament, thus giving visibility to the plight of the Saharawi people.
